Here at Smiths Hire, we are always up for a challenge and working with sea aliens may be up there with one of our weirdest requests to date but there’s no job too big or too small for us!
We were thrilled to spot one of our vast fleet of articulated booms on Blackpool’s promenade at the Tower Festival Headland, assisting with the largest light installation ever created for the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations.
The installation named Odyssey, will comprise of six large scale towers combined with state-of-the-art technology to create an immersive projection show themed on undiscovered creatures lurking in the depths of the deep sea.
The art collaboration was part of a design competition which was jointly won by artist Jack Irving (previously produced costumes for Lady Gaga and the Hot Ice Show at Blackpool Pleasure Beach) and Professor Finney’s team of computer scientists at Lancaster University. The installation will create a 15-minute interactive experience for visitors on the Promenade floor where alien sea creatures will swim and swirl around their feet followed by an ‘out of this world’ light and sound show created by the towers and 60 powerful lasers!
Luckily our Genie Z-60 Boom Lift was on hand to help complete the Odyssey installation. With its working height of 21m it’s the perfect way to access the 3,500 metres of LED lighting and the top of the tallest of the Greek mythology inspired towers – ‘Aphrodite’ which stands at 11 metres high and 7 metres wide!
